Contraception and Sexual Health

We offer contraception and sexual health screening at the Village Practice with our specialist team of doctors, pharmacists and nurses. When starting any new method of contraception, we have to check you are not already pregnant and have not been at risk of pregnancy since your last period or stopping the last method.

NHS contraception information is available here: https://www.nhs.uk/contraception/

IUD/IUS (Coil fittings, replacements and removals) or Implant (fittings, replacements and removals)

We offer bi-monthly appointments for Intrauterine Device (IUD), Intrauterine system (IUS) and Implant fittings and removals.

Before booking in for an IUD/IUS/Implant you will need to book for a consultation with one of our specialist healthcare assistants or GPs to discuss the contraception method and to prescribe the most suitable contraception for you before the appointment – you can book in for a pre-consultation by filling in our online form and requesting a IUD/IUS/Implant pre appointment or by calling our Patient Services team.

Combine oral Contraceptive Pill or Progestogen-only Pill

You no longer need to request oral contraception via the GP.

Your local pharmacy can issue the contraceptive pill and progestogen-only pill without a prescription from your GP. You no longer need to request this via the GP and can go directly to any pharmacy to start this type of contraceptive or to order a repeat.

If you would like to order your oral contraception as a repeat medication please ensure you are able to provide information for your ‘pill check’ such as an up to date blood pressure reading, height and weight. You can also use the surgery POD in the waiting area during our opening hours to do this.

Other Contraceptive options such as Patches and Injections

Other Contraceptive options such as patches and injections can be prescribed via the practice pharmacy team and nursing team, please fill in our online form to book an appointment to discuss the best options for yourself.

Emergency Contraception

If you need emergency contraception, you can get this for free from your local pharmacy if you are under 25 (this is due to be free for all women before the end of 2025).

You do not need a prescription for emergency contraception, this can be requested via any local pharmacy or order via an online pharmacy.

Specialist Sexual Health Services

You can make an appointment with any regular GP or practice nurse to have a check-up if you are worried about any sexually transmitted infections (STIs). We can offer treatment and counselling for most STIs. Our audits have shown we offer the same standard of care as a sexual health clinic.

We encourage anyone who may be at risk to have an HIV test – 1/3 of adults in the UK with HIV do not know they have the infection. Many people are diagnosed late when treatment can be less effective.

HIV Care

If you have HIV, we would like you to share this information with us; this is so that you get the best care from your specialist and your GP.

Your specialist will give us the most up-to-date information about your treatment and care. Many people with HIV can be well with or without treatment. However, if we know that your immunity is poor, it will help us to give you the right advice at the right time. It is also important to let us know if you are taking treatment for HIV as there could be interactions with common drugs such as antibiotics.

It is important to keep yourself fit and healthy whether you are on treatment or not.

Once you are on our register, we will invite you for health checks, flu, pneumococcal and hepatitis B vaccinations, contraceptive advice and yearly cervical smears for anyone with a cervix.
